Senegal abolishes Senate, Vice Presidency

Senegalese lawmakers, who are divided between a 150-seat National Assembly and a 100-seat Senate, voted to do away with the Senate,
passing a law, which dissolves the institution in order to save an estimated $15 million.
Minister of Justice Aminata Toure explained that the suppression on Tuesday of the Senate is intended to curb government spending, and
would provide the cash needed to help the victims of the yearly rains, which have left thousands homeless and killed at least 13 people.
Unlike the National Assembly, the senate is a relatively recent institution, and has become a
symbol of government waste.
It’s been frequently pilloried and described as an instrument of cronyism, a way to reward loyal
party workers who did not get elected to the larger National Assembly. Around half the senators are directly appointed by the president.
Congress also voted to abolish the Office of the Vice-President, established in 2009 by then President Abdoulaye Wade, the BBC reports.
It has never been occupied.

Aregbesola owes N480bn- Omisore

Candidate of the Peoples' Democratic Party in the last governorship elections in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has claimed that Governor Rauf Aregbesola took a loan of over
N480bn from various sources for his administration since he assumed
office in 2010.
He said the governor wasted the state’s resources on political campaigns during the Osun
governorship election and the general election without considering the consequences of his actions.
According to Omisore “The principal debt of Osun State under Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is N480bn. They
took N300bn loan, by taking N10bn for each of the 30 local government councils.
“They first raised N60bn bond and later raised another N40bn bond. They borrowed for O’meal project, borrowed for school uniform project and borrowed for airport project.
In a swift response, media aide to Governor Aregbesola, Mr Semiu Okanlawon has debunked the claims saying that the figures were fabricated and that Osun state's borrowings have not been in secret.
“Every knowledgeable person in Osun and beyond has the figures of the Osun borrowings by virtue of the open nature of the Aregbesola’s administration. Osun could not
have borrowed in secrecy as the two bonds were in the capital market and the Sukuk Bond was taken in celebrated manners.

Court bars Sudanese President from leaving South Africa

President Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan has been grounded in South Africa, on the orders of a South African high court sitting in Pretoria.
The order was made upon a request by the International Criminal Court demanding the arrest of Bashir, who was first indicted of crimes against humanity in 2009.
ICC had accused the Sudanese President of crimes against humanity and genocide during the
Darfur conflict which claimed hundreds of lives and displaced millions of people.
While postponing the hearing of the case till Monday Justice Hans Fabricius, urged the South African
authorities to “take all necessary steps” to prevent Bashir from leaving.
The arrest may however occur, as the Sudanese foreign ministry has described the ruling as "of no value" and there is a legal immunity in place for all African Union delegates in South Africa.

Osun Workers to be paid before June ends

After seven months of untold hardship due to unpaid salaries, respite might be on the way for Osun state civil servants as Governor Rauf Aregbesola, promised to pay the workers' salaries before the end of this month.
The promise was made in a statement issued in Osogbo on Sunday by the governor's aide,
Mr. Semiu Okanlawon.
Part of the statement reads, “Before the end of June, workers would be paid their salaries.”
The statement was however silent on whether the workers will be paid the seven months salaries or part of the salaries.

Hope for Osun State Workers as Governor Aregbesola promises to pay their salaries this month.

Governor Aregbesola of Osun state has promised to pay the money his administration owes workers.

Workers of Osun State at present are being owed seven months’ salaries.

According to the governor, he stated that he had a great dream for the state and that was why he was in a hurry to begin many programmes which had earned him applause even outside the country.

He went futhered, “The dream has not gone awry and it is a clear vision that Osun must be on its feet, self-reliant and be a reference point in Nigeria. The race to ensure development within the first term of Aregbesola was informed by the fear of what is happening now.

“Aregbesola wanted an Osun State that is self-reliant. That Osun State, almost two decades after its creation, could not boast of tax-paying companies speak volume about the magnitude of the works that awaited the Aregbesola administration.

“But he did not shy away from this task of industrialisation. Within his first term, his government had caused investors to bring up companies, such as the Omoluabi Garment Factory, Osogbo and Adulawo/RLG Technology Company in Ilesa.

“Just last month, a leading telephone line company, Airtel, came to establish partnership with the Adulawo/RLG Company. These are aside the various agro-allied companies which have benefited from the growth schemes of the Aregbesola administration throughout the state.

“The government has also commenced aggressive drive for the development of the solid mineral sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with an Australian mining firm, Andalusia Mining Industry.

“It was in the same vein that the idea of an airport for aircraft maintenance was conceived.

“Only a lazy administration would accept the tag of Osun State as a ‘civil servant’ state as excuse for not developing initiatives for industrialisation.

“To accept that our state must continue to survive on the meagre inflow through what goes to the civil servants alone is to accept that we would continue to depend on external forces for our survival.” He ended

APC Crisis!!! APC oppose emergence of Saraki as Senate President

APC opposes emergence of Saraki, Dogara, moves to inaugurate Senate afresh

The All Progressives Congress has described as totally unacceptable and the highest level of indiscipline and treachery the conduct of Tuesday’s inauguration of the National Assembly that led to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said: “Senator Bukola and Hon. Dogara are not the candidates of the APC and a majority of its National Assembly members-elect for the positions of Senate President and House Speaker. The party duly met and conducted a straw poll and clear candidates emerged for the posts of Senate President, Deputy Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, supported by a majority of all Senators-elect and members-elect of the House of Representatives. All National Assembly members-elect who emerged on the platform of the party are bound by that decision.

“The party is supreme and its interest is superior to that of its individual members.

“Consequently, the APC leadership is meeting in a bid to reestablish discipline in the party and to mete out the necessary sanctions to all those involved in what is nothing but a monumental act of indiscipline and betrayal to subject the party to ridicule and create obstacles for the new administration.”

The APC decried a situation in which some people, based on nothing but inordinate ambition and lack of discipline and loyalty, will enter into an unholy alliance with the very same people whom the party and indeed the entire country worked hard to replace and sell out the hard won victory of the party.

The statement by Mohammed added: “There can be no higher level of treachery, disloyalty and insincerity within any party.”

It vowed to resolve the matter using all constitutional and legal means available to it.
Meanwhile, the APC has ask

Fire guts Ghana Petrol Station, kills 150.

At least 150 lives were lost in Accra, capital of Ghana, after a petrol station went up in flames.

People were said to have sought shelter in a filling station because of a downpour when the tragedy struck. It was learnt that the explosion resulted from the flood that swept stored fuel into a nearby fire.

Spokesman for Ghana Fire Service, Billy Anaglate, had told the BBC that “at least 96 people have died in a fire at a petrol station in Ghana’s capital, Accra. The flooding helped cause the fire.”

However, as of 9.30pm on Thursday, Sky Newsreported that the death toll had increased to 150.

It was gathered that rescue efforts were being hindered by the high volume of flood which had displaced many. There were also fears that the number of dead could rise as the search of the site continues.
