OAU CLOSURE: Management has no reason to close school - Students Union

Lots of activities have trailed the shutdown of Obafemi Awolowo University, with the school management and the leadership of the Students Union sharing conflicting views.

In a reaction to the school closure, the Union leadership are writing a letter to the school management reminding it that the situation on ground doesn't warrant school closure. The letter also states the evils and dangers of such shutdowns, making references to death of students in the past.
A draft of the letter we stumbled upon reads
DRAFT OF LETTER TO THE AUTHORITIES
Information of a probable closure of the university reached the leadership of the students' union on Tuesday, 1st December 2015. The leadership as well as members of the congress of Great ife students union are worried and surprised by this
closure because we believe nothing has warranted the closure of the University under whatever guise.
Information reaching us also indicates that the closure of the university is going to be predicted
on the speculation of the authorities that the union intends to disrupt convocation and coronation
ceremonies. This is no more than sheer speculation and figment of imagination of whoever concocted the rumour. Please recall that the
congress of our union only resolved to embark on a day lecture boycott which has been effected and to subsequently engage the authorities in discussion on horrendous state of living and learning conditions.
It is the believe of the leadership that the authorities should not put students lives at risk because of a rumour that has no basis in reality. The University should recall that a similar closure of the University in July 15 led to the death
of more than two of our colleagues who were victims of fatal auto crashes. We have no doubt
that closure of the university under whatever guise may be accompanied by fatal consequences.
Although as a union, we will always engage and take up the authorities on matters relating the interest and democratic rights of our members and intact, seize constitutional, moral and democratic means to achieve these aims but we are not
miscreants or hoodlums who will resort to unwarranted actions. We wish to state in clear terms that our Union has never intended or
resolved to carry out any of such activities as disruption of convocation and coronation ceremonies. We do intend to make this clarification for record and historical purposes and we also
intend to make copies of this letter available to our congress.
Thank you.
Omotayo Akande Oluwaseun Oketooto
President Secretary-General

  1. Well, I would say a good peaceful protest do not go alongside battery or barricading as it's the case with our SUG.. I would be honest to say I feel the SUG can't just overpower this Management with this system they are used to. A protest, send 'em home and they'd resume needin' not to complain or press further. There is more to everything I know about all this but I know something for sure, any politics is not poliitic enough.
The ultimate thing now is a prayer to God such He helps us resume as early as possible early January next season if He's willing! Adios!.
